Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about working with Axis
We provide second opinions on automotive decisions for classic car and truck builders. Think of us as a judgment service—not a mechanic, not a parts supplier, not a how-to guide.
You bring us a decision point (Should I buy this engine? Is this quote fair? Do I rebuild or replace?), we analyze it, and we give you a clear recommendation backed by 15+ years of hands-on experience.
Forums give you opinions. We give you judgment.
On a forum, you’ll get 10 different answers from people with varying skill levels, biases, and agendas. Half of them haven’t actually done what they’re recommending.
With Axis, you get one focused analysis from someone who’s made the mistakes you’re trying to avoid, with no ulterior motive except helping you make a good call.
No. All consultations are virtual—phone or video call. We don’t touch your vehicle.
You describe the situation, we ask clarifying questions, and we give you our recommendation. That’s it. No shop visits, no shipping, no waiting weeks for an appointment.
30 minutes of focused consultation where we evaluate one key decision. Should you buy that part? Is the shop’s diagnosis right? Rebuild or replace?
You get:
• Real-time analysis of your situation
• Risk assessment and red flags
• A clear go/no-go recommendation
• Written Decision Record summarizing everything
What you don’t get: Step-by-step instructions, guarantees about outcomes, or hand-holding through the work.
Because complexity varies wildly. Reviewing a simple $800 brake job quote is different from evaluating a mid-build crisis on a $15K project.
Email us with your situation and we’ll quote you fairly. We’re not trying to be mysterious—we just don’t want to charge you $99 for something that needs 90 minutes, or quote you $500 for something that takes 20.
No. You’re paying for judgment, not agreement.
If we tell you not to do something you really wanted to do, that doesn’t mean the service failed—it means we just saved you from a bad decision.
We deliver what we promise: an honest, unbiased evaluation. If you only want advice that confirms what you already decided, we’re not a good fit.
The more context you give us, the better our advice.
Have ready: photos of the issue, quotes/estimates you’ve received, details about your vehicle (year, make, model, mods), what you’ve already tried, and what your end goal is.
Don’t have all that? That’s fine. We’ll ask questions to fill in the gaps. But the more you bring, the sharper our analysis.
No. That’s not what we do.
We tell you whether to do it, not how to do it. We evaluate the decision itself—not walk you through wrench turning.
If you need hands-on guidance, hire a local mechanic or take a class. We’re the people you call before spending the money on the mechanic.
That’s what Follow-Up Reviews are for ($59 for 15-20 minutes).
You did the Decision Call, then new information came up—a different quote, an unexpected finding, a change in circumstances. We reassess and confirm whether the original decision still holds.
Absolutely not. No one can guarantee that.
We give you the best judgment we can based on the information available. But we’re not fortune tellers, we’re not insurance, and we’re not liable if something unexpected happens.
What we do promise: honest analysis, no BS, and a clear recommendation you can act on.
Classic trucks, muscle cars, vintage imports, OBS builds, resto-mods, and anything with a carburetor or an engine swap.
Our wheelhouse: Engine swaps (LS, Coyote, etc.), cooling systems, carb tuning, transmission decisions, electrical/wiring, suspension setups, and general mechanical work.
Not our expertise: Modern computer tuning, hybrids, exotics, or race-only builds.
Yes. That’s literally our “Conflicting Advice Resolution” service.
Send us all three diagnoses. We compare them, identify who’s right (or if they’re all wrong), explain why, and tell you what to do next.
We’ll tell you what type of part to look for (OEM vs. aftermarket, brand reputation, specifications), but we won’t point you to specific vendors—we’re not getting kickbacks.
For shops: We can tell you red flags to watch for in a quote or whether a shop’s approach makes sense, but we won’t recommend specific shops since we don’t know your local options.
Usually within 2-3 business days. Sometimes same-day if you catch us during open hours.
Hours:
Mon-Fri: 7-11 PM ET
Saturday: 10 AM-4 PM ET
Sunday: By appointment only
We work with builders nationwide. Just mention your time zone when you book and we’ll coordinate.
You don’t need to—we provide a written Decision Record after every consultation. But yes, you can record for your own reference if you want.
